Score Collectible Teddy Bears in Auctions Like a Pro

collectible steiffCollectible teddy bears are so prized that they can easily smash some numbers at auctions both offline and online. But for someone who is just starting their collection or to that aficionado who isn’t well versed with the bidding platform just yet, how exactly does one score a collectible like a pro? We’ve got some tips. Read on to find out.

  • Gain a good amount of experience. There’s nothing wrong about bidding on your first auction but you might want to simply act as an observing eye at least for the first one. This way, you get a feel of how things work and feel.
  • Get your funding ready. You have to know how much resources you have, where you are deriving them and when they are available. They have to be on hand because you can’t keep the seller waiting. Others will try to grab the chance too so best be prepared. Besides, winning the bid is just the first part. You’ll have to provide your end of the bargain and that includes the payment.
  • Don’t be too transparent. If there are collectible teddy bears that suit your fancy, don’t show your emotions blatantly both to sellers and to other participating bidders. Do not by any means divulge how much your budget is or how much you are willing to pay because you’ll attract unwarranted attention and that information can be used against you. Keep your cards as close to your chest as possible.
  • Be aware of the toys being auctioned off. Know how they are valued in the current market. It is easy to say that a certain piece is valued this and that but you can never know for sure. What you can do is research, study and do arm yourself with knowledge. It shouldn’t be so hard given the presence of various channels especially the internet.
  • Set your limits. You need to have a maximum spending limit or else all hell will break loose. You need to act wisely and with that comes the need to conform to your budget and available finances. Don’t let emotion drive things on its own. You’ll regret it later.
  • As much as you can score items lower than their market value you can also be prone to spending way more than that. To do away with such mistake, be sure to read up and research on how certain assets are valued. Consider features, location and useful life among others.

Steiff Bears and Their Makers

Steiff bears have long been crowned as a pioneer in the toy industry and as one of if not the best in the world. They have come a really long way and are brimming with so much history that they can be considered an heirloom and treasure of sorts to. Collections of these abound all over the world which no longer comes as a surprise.

But have you ever wondered how these toys came to be? Who were the people behind the brand? Let’s all find out with this little trip down memory lane.

The founder of the company, Margarete, as what her peers would often refer to her, was born on the 24th of July in 1847 to parents Friedrich and Maria in Giengen, Germany. She was the third in four children with two older sisters and a younger brother.

At the age of one and a half, Margarete was found to have polio lending her feet paralyzed and confining her into a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Nonetheless, she grew up to be a happy and positive child.

Always trying to overcome her limitations and do what her heart desires, Margarete wished to attend a sewing school. Her father Friedrich objected at first, not wanting to cause her any frustrations, but eventually agreed in the end. Margarete proved herself and by age of 17 became a very skilled seamstress. In 1874, her father converted one of the house’s rooms into a dressmaker’s workshop.

Margarete needed help from her sisters, Marie and Pauilne to run the shop. They were in fact the first people in their two to buy a sewing machine. Word got out and soon the girls became quite popular.

In 1880, she saw an elephant out of a magazine and fashioned a pin cushion made of felt out of it. She sold eight of these. However, they were played with instead of dotted with pins as children found them to be quite charming. People then began asking more of it and soon Margarete was sewing plush toys. From here the brand was born.

Bear 55PBIn 1897, Richard, Margarete’s nephew, entered the company. He was a graduate of applied arts whose animal sketches were the basis of many of Steiff’s toys. He was said to have a certain fondness for bears that in 1902, he designed the “Bear 55PB”, the very first teddy bears the world has ever laid eyes on.

Although initially hesitant, Margarete allowed Richard to present the Steiff bears at the Leipzig toy trade fair where an American businessman saw them and ordered 3,000 pieces, all of which he brought to the United Stated where it had received massive success.

Tips When You Shop for Steiff UK Teddy Bears in Vintage Shops

When collectors shop for Steiff UK teddy bears nowadays, the initial response would be to go to the internet and hit the right buttons. With our modern world, this isn’t a strange a thing as it would have been a century ago. However, collectible pieces are not solely traded in the interwebs. You’d be surprised to know that quite a number of interesting finds are a product of vintage or antique shops.

Today, we’ll give you a few tricks and reminders to make Steiff teddy bear shopping in vintage shops a rewarding treat!

  • Know your bears. We don’t expect you to know every single detail there is about all the models released during the past century but if you are a passionate collector then you must at least have some knowledge in your sleeves. Remember that as years went by, the designs and materials varied. You can tell the age of an item based on the material it is made of.
  • Always scrutinize the button in ear. This trade mark also known as the “Knopf im ohr” is a signature originally created by Steiff to differentiate its products from imitations. Its design and material varied not only throughout the years but also depending on whether or not it was a limited edition release.
  • steiff-ukThe button in ear and fabric tags adds value. Their presence can bring up the price of the toy significantly. Not only are they a trademark feature but they too make the pieces unique from all the other stuffed animals in the market then and now. Its absence of course doesn’t mean that the item is immediately fake and one can easily find a puncture where it once was but that would really bring down the toy’s value.
  • Don’t sacrifice condition. Just because it is a rare toy doesn’t mean that it is reasonable to buy it even when it is in a poor state. If it is for example too damaged or you have good reason to believe that it is infested with bugs then don’t make the bet. It’ll only likely infect your other collection pieces.
  • Try to dig history. Where possible, ask the shop’s owner if they have any idea or recollection as to how the toy came into their shop. That should give you even the slightest clue about the toy’s upkeep and authenticity.

Act on it fast.

  • Put them in good storage.

Invest in quality storage for your vintage Steiff bears. Choose one that is not easily penetrated by dirt and one that keeps them at harm’s way from children and pets. Shelving would be great as well as glass door cabinets.
